China-Italy University Rectors Dialogue Held in Beijing

On November 9th, China-Italy University Rectors Dialogue, themed “Promoting Mutual Learning among Civilizations and Cultivating Outstanding Talents” was held at Peking University. The event was co-hosted by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and the Italian Ministry of University and Research, and jointly organized by Peking University and Zhongnan University of Economics and Law (ZUEL).

Minister of Education Huai Jinpeng attended the meeting and delivered a keynote speech. Ana Maria Bernini, the Italian Minister of University and Research, addressed the dialogue via video. The event was moderated by Chen Jie, Vice Minister of Education. Marcella Gargano, General Director of the Italian Ministry of University and Research, representatives the Italian Embassy in China, and heads of nearly 50 Chinese and Italian universities, including Zhu Fangwei, President of ZUEL and the heads of Sapienza University of Rome, and Oliviero Diliberto, Italian Dean of the School of Law and Economics, attended the dialogue.

At the opening ceremony, Huai Jinpeng noted that China has been making continous efforts to expand educational cooperation, and foster academic exchanges and cooperation with other countries, including Italy, as well as emphasized China’s commitment to actively participating in global education governance and contributing to the reform and development of education worldwide. He also proposed three initiatives to promote educational collaboration between China and Italy. Huai Jinpeng acknowledged the progress made in educational exchanges and joint scientific research between the two countries, noting ZUEL’s remarkable achievements in its collaboration with Sapienza University of Rome, scaling up Sino-Italian educational cooperation.

A highlight of the dialogue was the China-Italy University Cooperation Exhibition, organized by ZUEL. The exhibition showcased collaborative projects involving 25 Chinese and over 40 Italian universities and institutions, attracting considerable attention from participants. During the dialogue, Huai Jinpeng and Chen Jie visited the exhibition and held a conversation with Professor Oliviero Diliberto at the ZUEL display board.

The launch ceremony of the Italian segment of the “Doubling the Scale of European Youth Exchanges in China” initiative and the signing ceremonies between Chinese and Italian universities were held during the conference. ZUEL President Zhu Fangwei and Professor Oliviero Diliberto jointly signed Letter of Intent for Establishing an Interdisciplinary International Joint Research Center between Zhongnan University of Economics and Law of China and Sapienza University of Rome.

Zhu Fangwei presided over the parallel forum on “Cultural Inheritance and Innovation: The Future Mission of Higher Education” and made a concluding speech. 19 universities from two countries participated in the forum and had a lively discussion around the theme. In his conclusion, Zhu Fangwei held that this forum not only focused on hot issues of the era, but also reflected the determination and courage of Chinese and Italian universities to jointly deal with challenges and work together in the context of globalization. Universities play a crucial role in cultural inheritance and innovation of both nations. The two sides look forward to further expanding our cooperation with Italian universities, inheriting the cultural traditions of the two nations, and enhancing exchanges and mutual learning between the two civilizations. Through these approaches, the two countries are committed to contributing our wisdom to the progress of human civilization and the response to global challenges.

Following the dialogue, representatives from Chinese and Italian universities attended President Sergio Mattarella’s lecture at Peking University.

The dialogue establishes a new platform for enhancing educational exchanges and cooperation between the two nations. It lays a solid foundation for universities of both sides to collaborate in nurturing future talent and leaders and fostering cultural inheritance, innovation and exchanges.
