Unveiling a Global First: A General History of Chinese Accounting Officially Launched!

On January 7, the Hubei Provincial Social Sciences Association and the School of Accounting at Zhongnan University of Economics and Law (ZUEL) jointly hosted the release conference for a major social sciences achievement in Hubei Province. The event included the launch and academic seminar for 'A General History of Chinese Accounting' at the Yangtze River Lecture Hall, Hubei Provincial Library. It was chaired by Liu Aiguo, Secretary of the Party Committee and Executive Vice Chairman of the Hubei Provincial Social Sciences Association, with the attendance by officials and experts from nearly a hundred institutions.



Liu Aiguo highlighted that as a significant contribution focusing on cutting-edge academic development, foundational theories, and key practical issues, 'A General History of Chinese Accounting' represents a new milestone in the study of accounting history in China.

Yang Canming, President of ZUEL and Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, remarked that Professor Guo Daoyang has made significant contributions to the rapid development of China's philosophical and social science system, thanks to his over forty years of unwavering commitment and dedication.

Xu Zhengming, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the China Finance and Economics Publishing Media Group, described 'A General History of Chinese Accounting' as a landmark academic work and a pivotal achievement in the field of accounting history, debuting China's ancient and splendid accounting culture on the global stage.

Cai Jingfeng, Deputy Director of the Publicity Department of the CPC Hubei Provincial Committee, commented that 'A General History of Chinese Accounting' possesses substantial academic value and exemplifies the scholarly ethos of Hubei's social science community through its dedicated research, rigorous methodology, and unceasing pursuit of knowledge.

Yang Yunyan, a member of the 14th Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Deputy Director of the Standing Committee of the Hubei Provincial People's Congress, and Chairman of the China Democratic League (CDL) Hubei Provincial Committee, emphasized that 'A General History of Chinese Accounting' is a testament to the remarkable achievements of the accounting field in China. He urged various professions and social sectors to collaborate and progress in writing new chapters that meet the expectations of the era and the people.

Professor Massimo Sargiacomo, former President of the International Society of Accounting Historians, described 'A General History of Chinese Accounting' by Professor Guo Daoyang as a milestone in the field.

Sun Baohou, President of the China Audit Society and former Deputy Auditor General of the National Audit Office, encapsulated the major achievements of Professor Guo Daoyang and 'A General History of Chinese Accounting' as five 'ones': 'one set of profound volumes', 'one major achievement', 'one long-term commitment', 'one shining example', and 'one eternal Way'.

Liu Guangzhong, a Level-1 Bureau Rank Official in the Accounting Department of the Ministry of Finance and Secretary-General of the China Accounting Society, noted that 'A General History of Chinese Accounting' has introduced a Chinese perspective in global accounting history research and bridged a gap in the study of Chinese accounting history, particularly in comprehensive historical research.

Professor Li Jianfa, former Executive Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee at Xiamen University, expressed that 'A General History of Chinese Accounting' holds profound importance in fostering cultural innovation and developing a system of philosophy and social sciences with distinct Chinese characteristics for the modern era.

Yang Xiongsheng, Professor of Accounting at Nanjing University, and Wu Liansheng, Vice Dean of the Business School at the Southern University of Science and Technology, spoke on behalf of the academic community.

Wang Guangyuan, Vice Chairman of the Fujian Provincial People's Political Consultative Conference and President of the Fujian Provincial Federation of Industry and Commerce, remarked that 'A General History of Chinese Accounting' highlights the cultural significance and impact of Chinese accounting, serving as a foundation of confidence and a source of strength for the advancement of the field in China.

Professor Guo Daoyang presented copies of 'A General History of Chinese Accounting' to the Hubei Provincial Library and the Zhongnan University of Economics and Law Library.


In his keynote address, Professor Guo Daoyang recounted that he started writing the book in October 2011 and completed it in September 2021. Over the ten years, he revised the manuscript three times. With each draft comprising over 3 million words, the cumulative total reached approximately 10 million words.
