Breakthrough Achievement Obtained at the 10th Red Cross International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition (2016)

News Network (Reporter Deng Lie) At the 10th Red Cross International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition (2016) (“the Competition”) held on November 18th-20th by International Committee of the Red Cross and China University of Political Science and Law, the delegation of ZUEL made an unprecedented achievement, ranking the fourth (the first prize) at the national competition. In the preliminary, the delegation obtained the “Best Oralist” and “Best Indictment” as the most awarded one among all the delegations, fully demonstrating the excellence of the students of ZUEL. The delegation includes four undergraduate students, Xu Lingming, Qin Xihan, Mo Weiting and Qi Zimu from Law School and Criminal Justice School with Professor Deng Lie from Department of International Law of Law School as the advisor and postgraduate Yu Lu as the coach.


The Red Cross International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition is an international moot court event hosted by the International Committee of the Red Cross and started from 2007 with English as the competition language. 20 experts of higher institutions, law firms and courts from home and abroad consist the professional and international team of the judges. The cases in the competition are chosen by the legal experts of the International Committee of the Red Cross The number of participating teams is the largest one ever, which makes the competition the most fierce one. There are over 160 participating members from 32 teams including Peking University, Fudan University, Renmin University of China, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Nanjing University, Xiamen University and Wuhan University. In the competition, the competitors, in the position of the prosecutor of International Criminal Court (ICC) and defense counsel, respectively conducted oral presentations in English on issues of the protection of cultural heritage and the medical support for civilian in accordance with Treaty of Rome, International Humanitarian Law and other knowledge of international law.

Each team shall attend two competitions as the prosecutor and the defendant in turn. The team, ranking the top eight with the total score of legal texts and courtdebate, was qualified for the final. In the first competition, as the prosecutor, our school defeated the team of North-East University of Finance and Economics with an overwhelming advantage; in the second competition, with Peking University as the opponent, our team gained the recognition of the judges with excellent performance. Finally, our team entered the final with a 7-pointadvantage of the total score over the second team. At the same time, as the result of the excellent writing skill and in-depth analysis, the team was honored the “Best memorial”. Equipped with the sound knowledge of English and their profession, Qin Xihan and Xu Lingming won the title of “Best Oralist” with their enthusiasm and responsible attitude.

In the quarterfinal rounds, facing the strong team of Shanghai Jiao Tong University who was instructed by foreign experts, we, as the prosecutor, won the high praise from the three judges with the respect of the excellent work as a team, outstanding performance and perfect mastery of knowledge of law, thus getting the access to the semifinal rounds.

In nearly four months, the advisors and the students worked hard and overcame various difficulties, paying their full heart to finish the indictments. They spent nearly 20 days in practicing the debate. Through the training of the moot court, not only had they expanded their knowledge and theory of law, but improved their ability in legal writing, application of law, court debate as well as the legal ethnic.
